Baia Mare, main city of Maramures county, is located in the North-West of Romania, about 400 km from Bucharest (capital) and about 60 km from the Hungarian border. It has an area of about 250 km², and has over 150,000 inhabitants.

Geographical position is N47.65734°, E23.57331°.

To North and East, Baia Mare is relatively close surrounded by mountains (over 1300 m high), and to South there are also mountains, little bit lower and at greater distance.

The city is crossed by the Sasar river with seven bridges over it.
